VIC: Endangered moth threatens $400 million development

A 400-million dollar residential development in Victoria is under threat from an endangered
moth which lives on the site.

Federal Environment Minister IAN CAMPBELL is considering whether the future of the
golden sun moth is jeopardised by Villa World's Eynesbury development.

News Limited papers report today the company was required to refer the project to Canberra
.. when its consultants found a population of 60 of the tiny moths during an environmental
assessment of the site .. 35km west of Melbourne.

The moth lives above ground for just four days .. after maturing for two years underground.

Villa World plans to build nearly three thousand homes and associated infrastructure.

Senator CAMPBELL sparked a brawl with the Victorian government on Wednesday by scrapping
the proposed 220 million dollar Gippsland wind farm at Bald Hills .. because it threatened
the survival of the orange-bellied parrot.
